"Being nominated for the Content Marketing Awards is my biggest achievement" says Catherine Parrott
Catherine Parrott is a Senior Project Manager at Mediaplanet UK in London. We set up a quick interview with her to give some insight into the Project Manager role, which we’re currently recruiting for.
What initially drew you to the role of Project Manager?
I was looking at sales roles, and Mediaplanet’s Project Manager position stood out because it allowed you to be much more creative than other ones. I found it appealing that you’re selling a product you’ve actually made, based on your own market research. I also liked that it's an international content marketing group, and employees get a chance to visit offices in some great cities. It’s the kind of role that gives you a lot of responsibility from the start, so you end up learning a lot about your own strengths and weaknesses. It’s a great role for anyone a little unsure about the direction of their career and wants something challenging and varied.
Was it as you expected?
Yes and no. I didn’t realise how much of a steep learning curve it would be! To produce something that is public facing, going out in the Guardian or another nationwide publication, is both daunting and rewarding. Picking up your first copy on publication day, and seeing your name in print, is a moment I won't forget.
What are the best things about the role?
Probably the ownership you get over your campaign. You’re totally free to be creative and you meet some amazing people. I got to go to parliament for my Women in Business campaign, to meet Griselda Togobo from Forward Ladies, and directors from Microsoft and HSBC. As a PM, you also get to hone in on topics that you are genuinely passionate about; an ongoing focus of my campaigns has been education and diversity issues.
Any highlights of your first year at MP?
My Women in STEM campaign was recently nominated for an award by the Content Marketing Association, which was unexpected! Of course, receiving the commission from my campaigns is always great, and is a deserved reward for all the hard work! Our end-of-quarter parties are also always a highlight.
What’s the office atmosphere like?
I like it, it’s always lively in the office with music playing and everyone looks out for each other. For example, when you are on your first call to a client – you know you have the whole office behind you and when you make a sale you get to play your chosen ‘sale song’ to celebrate!
Any advice for people potentially applying for this role?
Plan your sales song, of course, as it will stick with you! Aside from that, I would highly recommend applying to be a PM at Mediaplanet if you’re up for a challenge, in an environment that recognises and rewards hard work.
